Capitolwire: Dems say they can beat confident Piccola
Excerpts from a Capitolwire article by Peter DeCoursey

HARRISBURG (June 1) – [Sen. Jeff Piccola’s] Democratic fall opponent, attorney and businesswoman Judy Hirsh of Susquehanna Township, told a crowd of 150 well-wishers Sunday: “It is time the people of this Senate District had a senator who listens to them, who works for them, who represents their wishes.”

Campaign professionals in both Senate caucuses said the Piccola race is expected to be one of a handful of state Senate campaigns that receive the most money and attention from both parties.

At her rally on Sunday, Hirsh noted that for the first time in modern history, the district holds about as many Democrats as Republicans, and that Democratic presidential candidates poll well there.

[...]

Democratic State Committee Executive Director Mary Isenhour, also of Susquehanna Township, said: “Piccola started out as a moderate and flip-flopped on every issue and now he is a right-winger.

“That is not what Dauphin County voters want. We have a Democratic congressman in this area, Tim Holden, and now we have a strong candidate who will be the first Democratic state senator in Dauphin County.”

[...]

Democratic treasurer candidate Rob McCord says he sees higher Democratic tides than Piccola does.

“Sen. [Barack] Obama will likely be the nominee and likely do exceptionally well in Dauphin County," McCord said. "A lot of Democratic voters crave the opportunity to vote for a very strong, able, experienced woman candidate.

“Like Obama, she is incredibly smart and decent. If she is able to combine strategic door-knocking with good fund-raising, combined with her listening skills and charm, she has a strong shot in this presidential year.”
